Rs. 5K relief payment: Probe on alleged irregularities

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa  The final report of the probe carried out by the Auditor General's Department on alleged irregularities in the distribution of Rs. 5,000 for those who were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic would be completed within three weeks, according to Deputy Auditor General P.L.K. Perera.   He told The Sunday Morning that the National Audit Office (NAO) has audited the first round of the distribution of Rs. 5,000 and after that, the Government had distributed money several times and the NAO noticed a reduction of the irregularities during the audit.   Perera also noted that they had to face numerous obstacles during the audit due to the inability to get relevant documents.    "The audit got a little delayed due to the prevailing situation with the limited number of officers working due to travel restrictions and also because we are completing several other audits requested by Parliament,” the Deputy Auditor General added.   According to him, audits would also be conducted on other rounds of fund distribution in the future. The Rs. 5,000 allowance was provided for Samurdhi beneficiaries, persons who were already receiving government allowances, low-income earners, and those who have lost their income due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
