Rusiru Indunil is a travel content creator on Instagram. Going by the name of @_____rusii___boy____ he shares his work as a travel photographer to a rapidly growing audience.
Much like many of the Sri Lankan travel content creators on social media, Rusiru maintains that while travel photography is certainly a deep rooted passion of his, it is simply a side hustle, and that his main stream of income is a personal business which he runs from his hometown in Monaragala.
He shared that while he currently earns a living via alternative means, he hopes to give a lot more prominence to photography as time goes on.
Having started his travel journey way back in 2017, Rusiru said he believes Sri Lankans are particularly blessed when it comes to nature and being able to travel, offering an abundance of opportunities to create travel-related content. “Sri Lanka, being a diverse country, offers magnificent opportunities for people of all backgrounds,” he said, adding that while this diversity inspired him to explore what our island has to offer, he himself had a personal drive and mission to share his experiences with others: “I was always interested in providing a pathway for people to enjoy the beauty and embrace the elegance of my motherland.”
As a consequence of this passion, Rusiru began to explore Sri Lanka as thoroughly as life allowed, while also sharing all that he encountered to a modest audience when he first launched his Instagram page: “I started doing travel photography and providing people with that pathway through that page.”
“The love I have for travelling and the extreme extent to which I enjoy travelling has opened new doors for ideas and allowed me to take my content to the next level,” said Rusiru, providing that he is incredibly grateful to be in such a position where his content is appreciated and viewed by others who understand and support his personal goals.
“My main intention is to provide a gateway for people to enjoy the beauty of Sri Lanka, and if becoming a full-time content creator suits my intention better, I am ready to undertake it without any hesitation,” added Rusiru, sharing with us his aspirations to one day take on photography and travel content creation as his main stream of income, while continuing to showcase Sri Lanka’s beauty to the world.
Considering his years of travel experience, Rusiru shared with us some of the more outstanding experiences he has had while out in the wild, providing that some of his absolute favourite destinations have been places like Lanka Ella, Lakshapana falls, Ambuluwawa, and Adam’s Peak, providing that they are undoubtedly some of the “best destinations” he has visited up until now.
Despite all this, however, he said that his first travel experience would always remain close to his heart as that was the stepping stone which inspired a journey that has flourished for years since: “I would like to share the most important and amazing experience in my life, which is my first travelling experience, when I went to visit the Lanka Ella located in the eastern side of Sri Lanka. Because I was somewhat of a novice in those days when it came to travel at the time, I often travelled with my friends. Thanks to their planning I have learned so much and I owe a lot of the beauty I have seen to those first experiences that opened my eyes. That first trip made me realise that there’s more beauty in this county that must be shared with our fellow citizens. I hope that one day this will help my county citizens to see the beauty I see through my eyes.”
Rusiru shared that when it comes to his content, he believes that he is offering something unique, as he takes effort to make all his captures his own, giving it a signature spin. “What’s unique about it is the colourful editing and shots which are mostly taken by the GoPro are always highlighted,” he said, adding also that he has had really wonderful feedback from Lankans and foreigners alike, much of his audience consisting of those from around the world.
Referring to his more recent activities, he provided that due to the islandwide lockdown and the continued pandemic he has had to halt his travel activities, and so new content has been difficult to source, he said however that he hopes to get right back into it as soon as it is safe: “I will be starting it soon whenever everything about the country and the pandemic situation gets back to normal.”
Finally sharing with us his future plans, Rusiru said that while his personal aspirations are important to him, his greatest wish is to be able to do something that allows Sri Lanka to shine, to have our island make a mark on a global platform.
