Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa has accepted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's invitation to form a new government, provided President Rajapaksa resigns within a minimum time frame. This was made known via a media release by Premadasa today (12). "I intend to discuss this extensively with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and alliance parties. Meanwhile, the SJB will join the new government as the main opposition party based on several agreements," the statement read. The conditions laid down by Premadasa are as follows: 1. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa must step down within a minimum time frame. 2. The 19A amendment to the constitution must be implemented, with the support of all parties, within a week of the formation of the interim Government. 3. The 21st amendment to the constitution, which has already been tabled in Parliament, must be gazetted and provisions of the Executive Presidency through the amendment must be abolished. 4. Once the livelihood of the people is restored and the rule of law is established, a sustainable government must be formed further to a parliamentary election, alongside the constitutional reforms. If this is not done, the economy will plunge down further, resulting in the country being put into the abyss. Additionally, Premadasa's statement read that the framework for the formation of an interim Government must be discussed prior to the swearing in of the new Prime Minister.
