Former Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa and leader of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) has urged the Health services Director General to provide a written confirmation guaranteeing that it is safe to conduct the general elections on the 20th of June.
The Election Commission unanimously decided yesterday to hold the postponed elections on the 20th of June. The polls body met with party leaders this morning to convey its decision.
"We need to know if there will be a coronavirus free environment atleast five to seven weeks ahead of the election. We want this assurance from the Health Services DG," Premadasa told reporters following his meeting with the EC.
Premadasa said the certificate was necessary to commence election campaigns.
"We do not want to hold elections at the cost of people's lives," Premadasa pointed out.
