Former Western Province Governor Azath Salley was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday (16) in Colpetty on the advice of Attorney General (AG) Dappula De Livera. Co-ordinating Officer to the AG State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the CID had launched an investigation into several remarks allegedly made by Salley with regard to the law of the country, following complaints lodged with it. The AG has advised the CID that credible information has been disclosed of offences allegedly committed by Salley under the Penal Code, the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (PTA), and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act through an alleged speech made by him on 10 March.
