Former Governor Azath Salley, who is under Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detention over certain allegedly controversial sentiments expressed by him, has been admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo due to diabetes-related complications.
Speaking to The Morning, Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that although Salley was experiencing high blood sugar levels when he was admitted to the hospital, his condition is not critical.
When contacted, National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL), Colombo, Director General Dr. W.K. Wickremasinghe added that he cannot reveal any information since Salley is a patient at the hospital.
He is currently receiving treatment in Ward 49.
Salley was arrested on the orders of the Attorney General (AG), by the CID, under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act (PTA).
AG’s Co-ordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said that the AG had advised the DIG in charge of the CID, that “credible information has been disclosed of offences committed under the Penal Code, the PTA, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act by Salley in a speech delivered by him on 10 March”.
Salley had allegedly stated that the Muslim law cannot be changed and that his community will only respect these laws and no other.
This prompted Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekera to demand his arrest, as it was, according to him, a statement that supported religious extremism.
Several parties have lodged complaints with the CID against the said controversial statement by Salley, and according to the Police, investigations are being carried out into his statement and the statements made on social media regarding the incident.
