Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake remanded till 25 May

BY Buddhika Samaraweera Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake, who were arrested in connection with the incident of peaceful protestors in front of Temple Trees and at Galle Face Green being attacked by a group of SLPP supporters on 9 May, have been remanded until 25 May. The two MPs were arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Tuesday (17). They were produced before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court yesterday (18), and were ordered to be remanded until 25 May. Meanwhile, the CID had arrested four suspects including Moratuwa Municipal Council Mayor Saman Lal Fernando and “Nawa SinhaLe” organisation National Organiser Dan Priyasad in connection with the said attacks on peaceful protestors. Also among the arrestees were Seethawakapura Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairman Jayantha Rohana and Kelaniya PS Member Manjula Prasanna. Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam PC, through Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena PC, had on Monday (16) instructed the CID and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne to arrest a total of 22 persons, including four MPs and a top cop, if reasonable suspicion existed regarding their involvement in the incidents of 9 May. The list also included Fernando, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon, Priyasad, Nalaka Wijesinghe alias “Satha”, Bandula Jayamanne, Dineth Geethaka, Araabi Wasantha, Subash of the Dehiwala Town Council, Amal Silva, Sameera Chaturanga Ariyaratne, Ruwanwelle Ramani, Thusitha Ranabhahu, Sajith Saranga, Mahinda Kahandagama, Pushpa Lal Kumarasinghe, Nishantha Mendis of Moratuwa, Pushpakumara (ex-Army), and Shavin Fernando of Wennappuwa. Accordingly, the CID had informed Speaker of Parliament Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena that it intended to record statements from seven MPs in connection with the investigation into the said incidents. In addition, the CID also recorded a statement from Tennakoon on Tuesday. On 9 May, a group of SLPP supporters who had arrived in Colombo to meet former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, subsequently attacked the “MynaGoGama” and “GotaGoGama” protest sites in front of Temple Trees and at Galle Face Green. Following the attack, tense situations erupted in several parts of the country.
