Sanjay Rajaratnam sworn in as AG

Sanjay Rajaratnam PC was sworn in as the 48th Attorney General (AG) of Sri Lanka yesterday (26) by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the President’s Media Division announced. Rajaratnam has served in the AG’s Department for 34 years and has served as Senior State Counsel, Deputy Solicitor General, Additional Solicitor General, Senior Additional Solicitor General, and Acting Solicitor General. Educated at St. Peter’s College, Colombo and Royal College, he holds a Bachelor of Laws from Queen Mary University, London. Rajaratnam is a Solicitor in England and Wales. He was sworn in as President’s Counsel in November 2014. He has extensive experience in civil and criminal law and has also served as an advisor to several government agencies, including the Financial Intelligence Unit of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, and is a member of the Legal Commission of Sri Lanka and the Legal Education Council. Meanwhile, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) welcomed the appointment of Sanjay Rajaratnam PC to the office of the AG following his swearing in. “Whilst congratulating the new Attorney General, we have the confidence that he will exercise his duties impartially and maintain the independence of the office. We look to him to uphold the Rule of Law, the independence of the judiciary, and the fundamental human rights of the people,” a statement issued by the Executive Committee of the BASL said. The BASL also noted that at the time of his appointment as the AG, Sanjay Rajaratnam PC was the Acting Solicitor General and the most senior officer in the Department of the AG presently eligible for appointment, having served the AG’s Department since 1988. The BASL commended President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Parliamentary Council for giving due consideration to the vital criteria when appointing the AG on the first occasion such an appointment was made after the enactment of the 20th Amendment of the Constitution. Outgoing AG Dappula de Livera PC was also thanked by the Association for his service to the Department and for the co-operation he extended to the BASL.
