Sapugaskanda oil refinery plant to resume operations

05 Dec 2021

The Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery plant is to resume operations once again on the 7th of December as announced by the Ministry of Energy. Speaking to The Morning, Minister of Energy Udaya Gammanpila stated that the decision to restart operations of the Sapugaskanda refinery was because it was of utmost importance to benefit the industries effected by the closure of the refinery. He added that when the oil refinery plant was closed on the 15th of November, an exact date of re-opening was not declared, other than the closure could go up to 50 days. "When I was inquired as to how long the plant would remain closed, I said up to 50 days. This can be 2 days, 5 hours, 10 days or up to 50 days. We realised that the industries that are affected must also be considered and thus we took the initiative to re-open the plant," said Gammanpilla. The Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery plant was closed on the 15th of November citing many reasons including long overdue maintenance and the unavailability of crude oil.
