SC calls for prompt investigation into Ratwatte case

21 Oct 2021

The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has called for a prompt investigation into the incidents relating to former State Minister of Prison Management and Prisoners Rehabilitation Lohan Ratwatte. Instructions on the same have been directed to the Inspector General of Police under the advice of the Attorney General. Leave to proceed has been granted by the Court. Accordingly, the eight inmates who had filed Fundamental Rights petitions before the Supreme Court have been ordered to be moved to another prison, as per their request. This comes after an inebriated Ratwatte’s alleged attempts to degrade and punish these prisoners held at the Anuradhapura Prison Complex by ordering them at gunpoint to kneel down in front of him.
