SC stays re-enforcing of death penalty

05 Jul 2019

The Supreme Court today (5) issued an interim order staying the implementation of the death penalty until October 30.

A petition against the death penalty was filed by Attorney K.H. Diganage citing that resuming judicial hangings is a violation of fundamental rights in the country.

The Attorney General, Justice Minister, and the Prisons Commissioner General were cited as respondents by the petitioner.

The respondents have been issued summons to appear before court when the case is scheduled to be taken up for further hearing on October 29.
