SC upholds rights of differently abled

An order delivered by Supreme Court yesterday (18) has made it clear that state institutions must be more considerate in their access and services available to the differently abled individuals. The Court ordered that eight state institutions including certain ministries must provide special access to persons with special needs. Among the eight institutions are six Ministries which include:
  • Ministry of Social Services and Social Welfare
  • Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government
  • Ministry of Urban Affairs and Western Development
  • Ministry of Education, Ministry of Housing and Construction
  • Ministry of Justice and Prison Reforms
  •  Ministry of Tourism
  • Urban Development Authority.
The order was issued following a petition submitted by Dr Ajith Perera who is a disability rights activist and is himself a paraplegic individual who is a well-recognized personality within the local as well as the international community for his efforts at social inclusion and equal opportunity for the disabled.
