School timings: Returning to normal from 1 Sept

  • School administration to ensure health guidelines are followed
By Sarah Hannan The school class times for Grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 in government schools and approved private schools will revert to regular class times from 1 September onwards, which is from 7.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., the Ministry of Education informed. “Last week, we decided that it was time to bring back all students to schools regardless of student capacity at each school. From 1 September onwards, even if the total number of students exceeds 200, the school administration will have to make arrangements to admit students while ensuring that they adhere to Covid-19-prevention health guidelines that were issued prior to commencing the second term for the academic year 2020,” Ministry of Education Secretary Prof. K.C.K. Perera said. Schools will have to arrange suitable classroom spaces and adequate numbers of teachers to conduct classes for the students whilst maintaining physical distancing. Perera noted that by now most of the schools have arranged hand washing facilities at the entrance of the schools and have already trained the schoolchildren to wear face masks as instructed. The Ministry of Education has issued instructions to all provincial chief secretaries, provincial secretaries of education, provincial and zonal directors of education, environmentalists, and principals of all schools to look into the matter. At present, classes for Grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 are held from 7.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m., and this time will come to an end from 31 August onwards.
