Isipathana College kept their unbeaten run intact as they held onto a narrow win over St. Joseph’s College by 16 points to 13 in the Super Round game played at Havelock Park yesterday (7).
The Josephians, who have already been hampered by several serious injuries, suffered a big blow early in the game. They lost both Isuru Kanchana and Dilhara Subhash after both players clashed together trying to tackle an opponent player.
It was the unbeaten Isipathana College who opened the scores with a converted try from K. Hettiarachchi. The move started from the line out, and Hettiarachchi broke off from the back to shove off the final defender and jump over. Malith Boteju added the extras.
The Joes made life harder for themselves when Chandupa Wimalasiri was shown yellow for repeated infringements. Isipathana dominated possession in the first half. They got close to the try line several times, only to spill the ball and let the Joes off the leash.
The second half started off with Isipathana College down to 14 men with their prop forward receiving yellow. However, it was The Green Machine who chipped in with a penalty to kick start the second half.
The Joes managed to put the first points on the board through a penalty from Ruchitha Rodrigo. Rinesh Silva immediately added a penalty for Isipathana to restore the 10-point lead. Rodrigo again was called for a penalty and he was successful for the Joes. Silva once again restored the lead with a successful penalty for Isipathana.
The Green Machine was down to 14 once more when S. Dinusara was sin-binned for the no-arms tackle. It paved the way for the Josephians to score their first try, through Naveen Marasinghe in the 65th minute. Rodrigo added the conversion to make it a three-point game. The time finally caught up on the Joes as Isipathana held on in the last couple of minutes to seal the win.
