Second dose of vaccine to be given within 10 to 12 weeks: Health Ministry

18 Feb 2021

The second dose of the vaccine is planned to be given within 10 to 12 weeks, Deputy Director of Public Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said. He said the manufacturer of the vaccine has initially instructed to administer the second dose of COVID vaccine in four weeks. “However, according to new evidence, experts have informed us that the second dose should be given after four weeks. The World Health Organization has published its recommendations. Taking all this into consideration, I conveyed this message to the experts of the Consultative Committee on Infectious Diseases, the consulting staff on vaccination. After reviewing the matter through them, it was decided that it is important to take more than four weeks to give the second dose. Accordingly, it was finally decided that a period of 10-12 weeks would be more suitable," he stated.
