The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) stated that it would need time till tomorrow (9) to publish the full report on the seismic activity that was recorded in the vicinity of the Victoria Reservoir.
GSMB Chairman Anura Walpola, speaking to The Morning, noted: “The full report will contain the scientific explanation on the reason behind the minor tremors that the residents had experienced on the two occasions last week. To briefly explain what took place, over time, the soil structure tends to pressure release and the displacement can cause minute seismic activity.”
Walpola noted that although Sri Lanka only experiences such minute movements decades apart in certain geological structures, such minor seismic activities take place hundreds of times during a day.
“These movements are not noticeable, and the noise that the people described as hearing a loud pop would have generated when pressure release weathering took place under one of the fractures. Following the recent incident, we are now deploying a team to continuously monitor the seismic activities in such vulnerable areas,” Walpola elaborated.
He added that going forward, should any construction work continue in areas that the GSMB has marked as sensitive, an assessment should be obtained by the GSMB and other institutes concerned, prior to construction commencing.
Pressure release weathering is the propagation of fractures near the surface of solid rock due to expansion related to the release of confining pressure when deeply buried rock is unroofed.
