Seneviratne sisters clinch women’s doubles plum

Anika and Alana Seneviratne, two sisters who were bottom-seeded, clinched the coveted Women’s Doubles title beating Janali Manamperi and Savini Jayasuriya 7/5, 4/2 (retired) in the event’s final held on Friday, 31 August at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) hard courts at Green Path, Colombo.

Meanwhile, in the corresponding Men’s Doubles final, Sharmal Dissanayake and Alex Fairbanks beat Dineshkanthan Thangarajah and Heera Ashiq 6/2, 7/5, also Thursday.

Five doubles pairs took part in this year’s Women’s Doubles.

Title double for Anjalika Kurera –

The Girls’ Under-14 and 16 Singles championships were won by Anjalika Kurera in this year’s Junior Tennis Nationals, being held simultaneously with the senor segment of the tournament.

Kurera beat Tanya Doloswala 6/1, 6/1 in the U-14 Singles final before winning over Oshini Herath 6/4, 6/4 in the U-16 finals.

Kurera, 14, emerged from Negombo to give a stiff resistance to her Colombo counterparts and is scheduled to meet Anika Seneviratne, 16, in the Women’s Singles finals at 1 p.m. at the SLTA on Saturday, 1 September hoping to win the ultimate title in country’s women’s tennis for the first time.

None of them has won the Women’s Singles title in the Nationals so far.
