The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched a separate investigation on Kurunegala District DIG Wasantha Kithsiri Jayalath over allegations that he provided information to the media without consulting the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Police sources told The Sunday Morning.
The special investigation is being conducted in parallel to the ongoing investigation against Dr. Mohamad Shafi who was arrested by Kurunegala Police over the allegation of acquiring assets in a suspicious manner.
Dr. Shafi is currently being held under CID custody and the CID is also investigating allegations he conducted non-consensual sterilisations. However, so far the CID had recorded statements from 421 women who had lodged complaints at Kurunegala Hopsital.
Police Spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara said that the CID has also recorded statements from 32 doctors including four VOG's (Obstetricians and Gynecologists), in addition to 18 hospital employees and 69 nursing officers.
