Several respondents summoned over SIS Chief defamation case

14 Nov 2021

Following the defamation case filed by State Intelligence Service (SIS) Chief Suresh Sallay before the Colombo District Court, the Court has reissued summons against South Africa-based human rights lawyer and activist Yasmin Sooka, a website operator and another UK based respondent. They are to be present in Court on 22 February next year when the case is taken up. This comes after Additional District Judge A.D. Chathurika de Silva ordered for the summons to be reissued as the defendants were not represented in court.  Major General Sallay seeks Rs. 1 Bn in damages from Sooka and the other respondents for defamatory statements made against him. The statements alleged that Sallay forced a Government doctor held in custody to produce false evidence by threatening and denying him medical treatment. Sallay further states that Sooka had made statements in reference to him which were then published on the website operated by the 2nd defendant. These statements were said to be false, malicious and defamatory in nature. Counsel Hiran de Alwis with Attorneys-at-law Pasan Weerasinghe and Medani Navoda instructed by Attorney-at-law Lakshika Bakmiwewa appeared for Maj. Gen. Sallay.
