30 Oct 2021

Several Parties representing the Tamil and Muslim community of Sri Lanka met in Colombo today (30) to discuss the Proportional Electoral System. The Parties who participated in the meeting are as follows:
  • Tamil National Alliance (TNA)
  • Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA)
  • Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC)
  • All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC)
  • Tamil National People's Front (TNPF)
  • Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP)
  • Ceylon Workers' Congress (CWC)
Party Leaders, along with representatives had attended the meeting. The collective of Parties had resolved to work together to preserve the Proportional Electoral System in view of the all-powerful executive presidency that was further strengthened by the 20th Amendment to the Constitution.  Party leaders said that the Parliament and Provincial Councils shall be elected by the Proportional Electoral System that would ensure representation of Parties with alternative political principles and social segments of Sri Lanka.  Therefore, the Parliament and all legislatures shall act as “check & balance apparatuses” in parallel with executive presidency in the interests of democracy.
