Seya: A young actress with a passion for dancing

01 May 2022

By Kusumanjalee Thilakarathna   Dancing can be a way to stay fit for people of all ages as it helps to improve muscle tone, strength, endurance, and fitness. Not only that: “Dancing is a great way to meet new friends too,” says 10-year-old Seya Wijesinghe whose ambition is to become a dancing teacher in the future. Seya believes that learning dancing skills can also help boost self-confidence. Seya is also a young actress who appears in TV commercials, music videos, teledramas, and films.    Q: Seya, tell us more about yourself. A: I’m Seya Wijesinghe. I am a dancer and an actress. I am 10 years old and I reside in Malabe. My school is Yashodara Maha Vidyalaya. I have one younger brother who is only four years old. I live with my parents and my grandma. My favourite thing to do is dance.    Q: When did you start learning dance techniques? A: I used to love dancing since I was really young. But I only started learning the traditions and techniques back when I was in grade four. Now I am in grade six. Apart from dance practises at school, I also attend a dance class in Thalawathugoda where I learn Kandyan dancing.    Q: What is your favourite subject in school? A: Well, that’s a difficult question to answer. We have a lot of new subjects in grade six unlike in the primary. I think I like science the most. I liked it from day one.    Q: Is dancing your only hobby? A: No. Not at all. I love to do ‘Do it yourself’ (DIY) crafts. I love to make new things from the things we no longer use. I also read storybooks as a hobby.    Q: What’s the last craft you made? A: I made a bunch of roses from paper. My mom always brings me stuff I need for the crafts. There are things at home too. It’s fun to do crafts and you can make someone happy by gifting them too.  We are having an arts and crafts exhibition in school next week. I am looking forward to that so I can display my crafts. I made some wall hangers using A4 sheets, especially for this exhibition.    Q: What’s your favourite storybook? A: Amba Yahaluwo by T.B. Ilangaratne. These days I am reading Cinderella. I am reading it for the third time now and I love it. I love Cinderella because she is hardworking.    Q: Would you like to share your experience as an actress with Little Stars? Yes, of course. I started acting in commercials when I was only three years old. Then I received many opportunities to act in teledramas and films starting with ‘Pata Pata Yalukam’ and ‘Dawalu Kiri Sihina’. I recently took part in a telefilm called ‘Yaluwo’. I have been in many music videos too.    Q: Who helps you to prepare when it comes to acting? A: Mainly my mom. She is always there with me. I usually don’t take much time to learn my dialogues. I read those 2-3 times and I usually remember them.    Q: What’s your ambition? A: I want to be a teacher – a dancing teacher.    Q: So, do you not want to continue your career in acting? A: I want to learn and improve myself to become a good actress in the future too. But my main passion is dancing and I want to teach my students the correct skills. It’s something I will be able to fully enjoy.    Q: Tell us about your baby brother too. A: He loves to see me on television. He screams with excitement when he sees me in dramas. I love to be with him. Now that he is four, we can play together. I teach him how to ride the bicycle and play ball with him. There are times when we fight too. He loves to annoy me when I am trying to focus on something important.    Q: Is there anyone you want to thank? A: My family mainly.  I want to thank Mr. Shantha Kumara Senaratne for choosing me for a television commercial. I was only three. Mr. Sunil Jayalath – who first gave me the opportunity to act in a drama. Mr. Chanika Perera and Tharindu Illangakoon for guiding me when we were shooting the teledrama ‘Alu’. It was an unforgettable experience in my short acting career. I also want to thank the Shade Mirror Modelling Agency.
