Illankai Tamil Arasu Kadchi (ITAK) MP Shanakiyan Rajaputhiran Rasamanickam said in Parliament today (09) that his privileges as an MP have been violated as the Eastern Province Governor has allegedly spoken ill of him, and that serious action should be taken against those who "name call" in Parliament. "The Governor of Eastern Province Mrs Anuradha Yahampath has spoken ill of me to several newspapers. She had insisted that the Senior Deputy Inspector of Police (SDIG) initiate an independent inquiry into a statement I had made in Parliament. When the SDIG spoke to me, he in fact mentioned that it was against my rights as a Parliamentarian, but went on to say that because a Government official has insisted, an inquiry has to be made. This is not the first time that the Governor has violated my rights, and it has happened several times even when I am in the Parliament. I have also been called names within the Parliament on several occasions," said Rasamanickam. He went on to state that this was a violation of privileges as a Parliamentarian and requested the Speaker of the House to take "very stern" action against the ridicule which he has been facing. "I request very stern action to be taken against the Governor as I believe that as a Speaker you are committed to the protection of all MPs. As you are aware, this is not the first time I have been called names. As the youngest member in Parliament, I would like to request the Speaker to take strict action so that the quality and traditions of the Parliament are protected," he concluded.
