Shanakiyan questions environmental destruction in Batticalo

17 Sep 2021

While revealing details of an alleged case of environmental destruction in Batticaloa, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP Shanakiyan Rasamanickam questioned why sand is being extracted from a nearby river to build a 2km road in Batticaloa instead of purchasing sand from a contractor. He posed such questions to Minister of Highways and Chief Government whip Johnston Fernando while addressing the media recently. On previous occasions, Shanakiyan has raised this question in Parliament, however a firm answer was not provided on the matter. “The people in this area lodged a police entry into this matter, but the local police are asking people for proof or to catch the sand being excavated from the river during the act. Isn't it their responsibility to investigate the matter?” he asked."
