Shops exploiting customers during travel restrictions to have licenses revoked

28 May 2021

Minister of State Lasantha Alagiyawanna says that if licensed shops are selling goods at high prices due to travel restrictions being implemented island wide, the licenses of such shops will be revoked immediately. Accordingly, action will be taken to issue the relevant license for another shop in the Grama Niladhari Division, said Lasantha Alagiyawanna, State Minister of Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection. He said the government has taken steps to allow mobile distribution, door-to-door delivery of goods and the opening of two shops in each Grama Niladhari Division in order to provide essential items to the public due to the travel restrictions in operation throughout the island. The Minister further said that these services will be activated on the basis of telephone calls received by the Consumer Affairs Authority (Hotline 1977) regarding the sale of goods at exorbitant prices.
