16 Nov 2019

Gunshots were fired at a bus transporting voters in Thanthirimalai in Anuradhapura this morning. The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said that a convoy of buses carrying voters was obstructed this morning in Thanthirimalai. The CMEV said that the bus was obstructed, pelted with stones, and shot at by unidentified persons. The Police are investigating the incident. The CMEV also reported multiple incidents of attempts to influence voters at several locations. CMEV received multiple reports of voters at polling centres in Buddhist temples, including the Rambukkana Raja Maha Vihara in Bandaragama, being influenced to vote in particular ways by monks tying pirith strings. The CMEV said it was also notified that a tense situation broke out due to a voter attempting to photograph the ballot paper after voting at Polling Centre no. 48, at Sharipuththa Vidyalaya in Matale in the Ratthota electorate.
