The Sinhala Rawaya Party has criticised the Government over the recent price controls imposed on essential items including sugar.
Party Secretary General Shalika Perera, speaking to the media, alleged that the Government is allied with the trade mafia to support the latter to make massive profits.
“The best example is the sugar tax of Rs. 50 being reduced to 25 cents. Now these importers are making massive profits.“
According to Perera, sugar imports during the last eight months were 584,000 metric tonnes (MT) when Sri Lanka needed only 359,000 MT for consumption. He questioned why 225,000 MT of sugar should be in stock.
“Only 29,000 MT of stocks of sugar were seized by the officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). Where are the other stocks?”
The maximum retail price (MRP) of a kilogramme of sugar as per the CAA is Rs. 130 for a packet and Rs. 125 for sugar not in packet form.
