Six people have been arrested in Bogawantalawa for illegal gem mining in a raid conducted by the Police Special Task Force (STF) in three different places in the area.
STF and Bogawantalawa Police are conducting further investigations regarding the incident according to Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana.
As travel restrictions were imposed on 26 May, the suspects had also committed an offence under the quarantine law.
"During the restriction period these suspects conducted illegal activities and in addition to that they have committed an offence under the Mines and Minerals ordinance," Rohana said.
The suspects will be produced before the Magistrate court.
Meanwhile, the STF conducted a special operation in Colombo 13 Newham Square area and recovered a motor car along with 56-year-old female suspect who was not able to produce any documents of the vehicle.
She is an ex member of Colombo Municipal Council and the vehicle has been illegally assembled.
