Four female inmates, two male inmates and one officer at the Welikada Prison tested positive for COVID-19, Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya said.
The positive cases have been identified during random PCR tests conducted by the prison authorities.
Mr.Upuldeniya said the infected patients have been sent to the Welikanda Hospital and added that PCR tests are being conducted on other inmates and associates of the patients.
He said it was not yet clear how the inmates have contracted the virus.
