SJB alleges presence of sugar monopoly

09 Sep 2021

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) recently alleged that a so-called sugar monopoly is present in the country and further stated that they believe that the Government is aware and a part of the same. At a recent media briefing, SJB MP Rohini Kumari Wijeratne claimed that only 12 companies have been granted permission to import sugar, instead of the 67 companies that used to. “Similarly, the Ministry of Agriculture has attempted to give 87% of agricultural imports to a single company,” Wijeratne says. Wijeratne concluded by saying that an increase in price by such actions taken by the Government will eventually be a burden borne by the farmers who produce crops.
