SJB, JVP questions lockdown’s effectiveness

22 Aug 2021

By Dinitha Rathnayake The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) said it is unsatisfied with the current lockdown measures imposed by the Government, according to SJB MP Tissa Attanayake. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (22), he said that while a lockdown is one way to prevent the virus from spreading, it needs to be implemented in a result-oriented manner, which he claims is not being done at the moment. “We don’t accept the method of allowing a few sectors to run as essential services. It’s a huge risk, especially for the people in the textile industry.” He also charged that the present Government is not considering public security and health. These sentiments were echoed by former Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) MP Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, who stated that allowing essential services to continue during the quarantine curfew highlights the inaccuracy of the decisions made by the present Government and the President. He told The Morning that it was disappointing to see the country in such an unstable state. “During this period, all essential services, as well as medical supply and distribution, agriculture, and textiles sectors can operate without any issue. This means this county has no strength to operate without agriculture or textiles. It’s a shame that the Government has failed to sustain the economy for at least 10 days without the functioning of these sectors.” He noted that medical professionals, religious leaders, politicians, and businessmen were united in calling for an immediate nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of infections. “But I don’t think the medical experts requested a lockdown like this. Permitting certain sectors to operate as essential services could put lives at risk.”
