SJB wants minority involvement in new Constitution

22 Jan 2021

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) requested the Government to utilise the methodology adopted by the former United National Front-led Government in seeking to formulate a new Constitution.   SJB MP and Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella further stated that the entire Parliament should be made a Constitutional Assembly, and that the process should necessarily involve the ethnic/racial minorities.  He stated this addressing a media briefing held yesterday (21) at the Opposition Leader’s office.  Kiriella noted that while they had no issue with the committee of experts, comprising lawyers and legal academics, that has been appointed by the Government and tasked with drafting a new Constitution, the fact is that in an exercise of this nature, the entire country should be involved.
