  • Says non-violent mass uprising should be backed up by interim action from P’ment
BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The 43rd Brigade led by Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition MP Patali Champika Ranawaka stressed that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa too must resign, thereby allowing for the appointment of an interim President. In a statement, they said: “There is no Government in the country now. The Parliament has a responsibility to build the country without it falling into anarchy. The Parliament must work to elect an interim Government until a General Election is held. The President must take action.  “The President must also resign, thereby allowing for the appointment of an interim President. The Rajapaksa system will not be defeated just after Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa stepped down. It is our position that the non-violent uprising of the people should be intensified and that it should be a completely non-violent intervention and that such a non-violent mass intervention should be backed up by interim action.”  Further, Rajapaksa-based politics can only be defeated by defeating the base political culture inherited from the Rajapaksas, and therefore, we urge the people to refrain from acts of violence, Ranawaka added, noting that the series of violent incidents that spread across the country on Monday (9) cannot be endorsed by any citizen.
