Sri Lanka has imported a train from China at a cost of $10.3 million (Rs. 1.83 billion) which will be the first of nine power sets, to run the Up Country line.
The S-14 class power sets were ordered as a result of the shortage of upcountry trains faced by the railway department. The trains are built to navigate on winding roads of the up country line.
The power-set comprises of two engines, two air-conditioned carriages, two second class carriages and two third class carriages and a dining car.
The railway department expects to start an intercity service with the 9 power sets. The remaining 8 power sets are to arrive in the next few days.
