SL-India to conduct joint anti-drug ops

By Dinitha Rathnayake  Sri Lanka and India are planning to conduct joint operations to carry out anti-drug smuggling operations in the Indian Ocean. Navy Spokesman Captain Indika de Silva, speaking to The Morning, said that this plan was discussed by the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne and Indian Navy Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Karambir Singh, and mainly focused on the curbing of drug smuggling and trafficking across the Indian Ocean.  Additionally, Admiral Singh also pledged his support with training facilities and expertise for capacity building in the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) as well as for a Naval Air Arm. Further, he extended an invitation to Vice Admiral Ulugetenne to attend the Goa Maritime Conclave conference to be held by the Indian Navy in October 2021.  Vice Admiral Ulugetenne attended the 24th International Seapower Symposium (ISS) organised by the US Navy, at the US Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island, from 14 to 17 September 2021. The main focus of the International Seapower Symposium was to create a forum for Heads of Navies across the world to concurrently deliberate on common issues to enhance maritime security and collaborative operations. This platform will also pave the way for efforts to enhance co-operation in countering piracy, providing disaster relief and humanitarian assistance, co-ordinating search and rescue operations and missions at sea, planning and conducting coalition military operations, and joint law enforcement to counter arms, drug and human trafficking, as well as fisheries and pollution related violations. On the sidelines of the symposium, Vice Admiral Ulugetenne called on the US Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael M. Gilday. Meanwhile, the Indian authorities seized over $ 20 million worth of heroin and detained seven Iranian men in a deep sea drug bust off the country’s Western coast on 19 September. Officials intercepted messages sent to the boat’s crew and apprehended the vessel travelling from Iran to Sri Lanka. Capt. de Silva said however that they had still not received any information related to this incident. Meanwhile, the SLN has seized a foreign fishing vessel carrying over 336 kg of heroin, along with seven crew members, in the international waters South of Sri Lanka, based on intelligence information received by the Sri Lanka Police. Navy Intelligence and Navy ships conducted a special operation to nab the foreign fishing vessel carrying narcotics. The operation led to the seizure of a foreign fishing vessel carrying over 336 kg (including the packages) of heroin, worth over Rs. 3,100 million in terms of the stock’s gross street value. The drug-transferring vessel, together with the seven foreign nationals on board, was brought to Colombo on 4 September 2021.
