SL-Oman bilateral co-operation in food sector mooted

03 May 2021

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the sultanate of Oman Ameer Ajwad recently had a fruitful discussion with the Oman Food Investment Holding Co. (OFIC) on promoting bilateral trade in the food sector between Sri Lanka and Oman.  Accordingly, Ajwad discussed promotion measures taken to strengthen bilateral trade in the food sector with OFIC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Saleh Mohammed Al Shanfari.  Ajwad was also reported to have been accompanied by Sri Lanka Embassy in Oman First Secretary Dilini Abeysekara. In addition, new areas for mutual co-operation in the food sector were also explored by both parties.   Thereby, they agreed to connect B2B (business-to-business) links between OFIC and food sector companies in Sri Lanka.  OFIC, owned by the Oman Investment Authority, is a state-owned-enterprise (SOE) established to promote Oman’s food security through partnerships with government agencies, private operators, and investors. The company aims to boost Oman’s food security and economic wellbeing by investing in domestic and international food projects in partnership with food companies, investors, and other stakeholders.  OFIC is a group of companies consisting of more than 10 prominent food sector companies in Oman. With over 25,000 Sri Lankans living in Oman, SL-Oman trade relations date back to 1982 when both countries established stable diplomatic relations with the Sultanate of Oman.  In April 2010, It was agreed that the bilateral relationship in the second decade would be marked by increased exchanges of high-level visits and economic partnership. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa also invited Sultan of Oman Qaboos Bin Said to undertake a state visit to Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the two delegations identified the sectors of fisheries, ship-building, apparel, construction, information technology (IT), tourism, and hydrocarbons as areas in which both countries can agree to work together, in the form of joint collaboration and joint investment.  Ultimately, Oman reacted positively and agreed for the early conclusion of a bilateral agreement on manpower, proposed by Rajapaksa. Thereby, it was also agreed that the Sultanate of Oman would dispatch a business delegation to Sri Lanka at the time.  As viable methods of building the nation back better, Sri Lanka should focus on aspects like inclusive growth, climate change, and digitalisation, according to former Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) Governor Dr. Indrajith Coomaraswamy.
