24 Sep 2020

The Ministry of Education has informed the private sector to send their suggestions and comments on how to eliminate the mismatch between higher education and the job market in this country, stated Minister of Education, Prof. G. L. Peiris today (24). “The best course of action to eliminate the mismatch between higher education and the job market in this country is to consider the views and suggestions of the private sector for curriculum updates, adjustments and revisions,” he said. The private sector has been requested to respond with suggestions on how to develop English education, soft skills, which have not been focused on during primary or higher education. Consequently, the Ministry of Education will be able to discuss at length and develop those areas in both primary and secondary education. The Minister stated this during an inspection of the Smart Classroom at Susamayawardana College, Colombo. “There are enough jobs in this country. The problem is that the job market does not produce the right people for the right job. Therefore, we request the private sector to submit to us in writing the soft skills required for the development of students in the field of education and higher education in the respective fields and the language skills required. Then we will be able to provide the human resources that suit their needs to the public as well as the private sector in this country,” the Minister further commented.
