SL-Russia Business Council to discuss action plan for bilateral trade

16 Dec 2020

The Sri Lanka-Russia Business Council stated it is planning to work online with the inter-governmental commission in both countries and organize a meeting online, to discuss all relevant aspects and an action plan for better bilateral business relationships for both countries.  The council considers that the Russian-Sri Lankan Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, and Technological Co-operation can be instrumental in the development of bilateral business ties. After the appointment of a Co-Chairman for this Commission by the Sri Lankan side, the Commission expects to hold its next meeting, subject to pandemic guidelines.  This was disclosed during the Sri Lanka-Russia Business Council’s 17th Annual General Meeting held recently. Russian Federation Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Yuri Borisovich Materiy graced the occasion, and addressed the online gathering as the patron of the council, where Sri Lankan Ambassador to the Russian Federation M.D. Lamawansa was also present.  Materiy stated that Sri Lanka remains one of Russia’s key partners in South Asia.  “Our ties continue to deepen in many spheres. Further impetus to our relations was given by the positive results of the visit of Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov to Sri Lanka on 14 January this year. In 2019, the volume of bilateral trade between Russia and Sri Lanka amounted to $ 400 million, with imports to Russia from Sri Lanka reaching $ 290 million. According to the Russian Customs statistics for the first eight months of this year, trade turnover has increased by 36%, reaching $ 352.8 million,” Materiy added. Materiy also noted that once the Covid-19 situation normalizes, the arrivals of tourists from Russia will increase significantly. “The Russian Direct Investment Fund, entrusted with promoting the Russian Sputnik V vaccine, the world’s very first adenovirus vector-based vaccine against Covid-19, is prepared for talks with international partners – the authorized and designated government-owned agencies and private companies – on joint manufacture of the vaccine and technology transfers, with prospects of the export of the vaccine to other countries,” Materiy added.  Avian Technologies (Pvt.) Ltd. Managing Director Buddika Liyanage will serve as the council’s new President, while Freight Links International (Pvt.) Ltd. Managing Director Niral Kadawatharatchie, and Salota International (Pvt.) Ltd. Managing Director Kolitha Wickremesinghe, will serve as Vice Presidents.  Buddapriya Ramanayake of MOS Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. has been elected as Treasurer, and South Asia Textile Industries Lanka (Pvt.) Ltd. Chief Financial Officer Priyantha Hapuarachchi joined the council in his capacity as the Immediate Past President for the period of 2020-2021. The following companies were elected for the committee member positions: Imperial Tea Exports (Pvt.) Ltd., Maharaja Organization Projects (Pvt.) Ltd., MAC Holdings (Pvt.)
