SLC, Sports Ministry in contradiction over delay in Asia Cup squad release

22 Aug 2022

BY Indrajith Subasinghe   =====BOX==== Chameera out of Asia Cup    Sri Lanka’s ace speedster Dushmantha Chameera, who was named in the 20-member Asia Cup squad, will not take part in the Asia Cup, as he has sustained an injury (on his left leg) during practices. The SLC Selectors brought in Nuwan Thushara into the 20-man squad, as Chameera will not take part in the tour owing to the injury. In the meantime, out of the 20-member squad, Dinesh Chandimal, Nuwanidu Fernando, and Nuwan Thushara will remain as standbys, and will not travel with the team. Nuwan Thushara’s name was submitted to the Ministry of Sports, seeking approval from Minister of Sports Roshan Ranasinghe.   Updated SL squad: Dasun Shanaka (Captain), Charith Asalanka (Vice Captain), Danushka Gunathilaka, Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis (Wicketkeeper/Batsman), Bhanuka Rajapaksha (Wicketkeeper/Batsman), Ashen Bandara, Dhananjaya de Silva, Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, Praveen Jayawickrama, Chamika Karunaratne, Dilshan Madushanka, Matheesha Pathirana, Asitha Fernando, Pramod Madushan   Standby players: Nuwanidu Fernando, Nuwan Thushara, Dinesh Chandimal (Wicket Keeper/Batsman)   Injured players: Binura Fernando, Kasun Rajitha, Dushmantha Chameera ===========   The relationship between the Sports Ministry and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) appears to be growing more tense with each passing day, with the release of conflicting statements from both parties regarding the delay in the provision of ministerial approval to the Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup 2022 scheduled to begin on 27 August. Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe, who had issued a statement on Sunday (21) through the Ministry’s media unit rejecting the media reports that blamed the Ministry for the delay, said that he received the relevant letter for approval last Friday (19) and that it was being approved within an hour of receiving it. The statement also claimed that approval was given without any delay, adding that if there had been any unnecessary delay on the part of the Sports Ministry, the Minister is ready to take legal action in this regard. Meanwhile, according to the squad announcement issued by SLC, the selection committee named the team on 10 August and forwarded the list to the Ministry for approval on 12 August. The SLC stated that another letter, containing a revised list, had been sent to the Ministry on 16 August for approval, but that the SLC has thus far only received approval for the initial list forwarded to the Ministry on 12 August. In the meantime, the Ministry had sent a letter to the SLC Secretary stating that the relevant applications for participation in an international tournament must be submitted for ministerial approval 21 days prior to said tournament, and that the Ministry could not approve the squad due to a lack of documents and deficiencies in the application. According to the letter issued by the Ministry last Saturday (20), this seemed to be the cause for the delay on the part of the Ministry. However, as The Morning Sports investigated the matter, certain officials disclosed that the same procedure had been followed by the SLC Board in sending the names of the squads for the Minister’s approval, and that the current Sports Minister had approved the squads that were referred to him through the same method on 12 August. However, on this occasion, the Ministry has brought up these issues on no real basis, they claimed. On the other hand, sources claimed, it was not practical for the Ministry to expect the squad list to be sent for approval 21 days before the Asia Cup, as the SLC Invitational T20 Tournament – which aimed to help select the squad for the Asia Cup – ended only on 15 August.
