  • Urges SLPP Govt. to appoint another from SLFP’s Nat. List nominees
  • Demands rectification of wrongs committed against SLFP if help is to be given to Govt.
BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has called on the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP)-led Government to remove Dr. Suren Raghavan, who recently took over a State ministerial post, from the SLPP National List parliamentary seat and to appoint another person to replace him. Speaking to The Morning, SLFP Senior Vice President Prof. Rohana Luxman Piyadasa said: “During the last General Election, the SLPP promised to give the SLFP two National List seats. However, Raghavan, who was third on the list that we gave, was appointed. This was done for the benefit of former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa. Simply put, this is part of a conspiracy.” He said that the conspiracy had now been exposed with Dr. Raghavan taking over as a State Minister at a time when the SLFP had decided to act independently in Parliament. He also said that the SLPP should therefore take action to remove the latter and appoint a person wanted by the SLFP to his Parliamentary seat.  “If the Government is asking for our help, then justice must be done to the injustices that befell us. Especially when Raghavan was given the post of a National List MP, the SLFP was not even consulted. All these must be corrected,” said Prof. Piyadasa. On 5 April, a total of 40 MPs who represented the Government informed the Parliament that they would be functioning independently in the Parliament from that day onwards. Among the said MPs were 26 MPs representing the SLPP and 14 MPs representing the SLFP, out of whom Dr. Raghavan and Shantha Bandara accepted the posts of the Higher Education State Minister and Promoting the Production and Regulating the Supply of Organic Fertiliser, and Paddy and Grains, Organic Foods, Vegetables, Fruits, Chillies, Onion and Potato Cultivation Promoting, Seed Production, and Advanced Technology Agriculture State Minister, respectively.
