SLFP faces imminent split

06 Oct 2019

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa and Skandha Gunasekara The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) is facing an imminent split with a three-way tug of war likely despite the outcome of a crucial SLFP Central Committee (CC) meeting last night. A vote was taken on Friday (4) among SLFP organisers to decide on the stand the party must take with regard to the presidential election next month. SLFP sources said that around 250 SLFP district and electoral organisers attended the meeting during which a vote was taken on key points. According to sources, the vote was indecisive – with some voting to align with the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) while others voted against such a move. Sources revealed that, regardless of whether the SLFP joins forces with the SLPP or not, there would be a split within the SLFP, resulting in members crossing party lines to join the United National Front (UNF) or the SLPP. SLFP senior MP Kumara Welgama, on Friday, handed over the cash deposit to the Election Commission (EC) to contest the election. He had decided to contest as an independent candidate as the SLFP was considering backing SLPP presidential candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa. When The Sunday Morning inquired about an imminent split from SLFP stalwart MP Duminda Dissanayake, he said that he was unsure of the outcome. “We are not sure yet how things will pan out. We have to see what developments take place,” MP Dissanayake said. However, SLFP Treasurer MP Lasantha Alagiyawanna told The Sunday Morning that a split within the party was unlikely. “I don’t think there would be a split. We will have to wait and see,” he said.
