SLFP-SLPP at loggerheads

05 Jan 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLFP) has been violated, senior SLFP sources alleged. Sources charged that despite the MoU between the two groups stipulating that various positions including ministerial portfolios as well as positions within Parliament were to be fairly shared, the SLPP had failed to do so. Sources also pointed out that the post of Leader of the House of Parliament was to be given to an SLPP member while the post of Chief Government Whip was to fall to an SLFP MP, but both positions were given to SLPP MPs. “We are unhappy about this and there is a problem. The MoU has clearly been violated,” senior SLFP sources said. However, the SLFP source maintained that for now, the SLFP faction had faith in President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s vision and therefore would be patient with regard to such issues. Meanwhile, the SLPP categorically denied that the MoU was violated in anyway. SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam told The Sunday Morning that the current situation was such that the MoU did not apply. “The present situation is such that there is only an interim government. This is not the proper government. We are still a minority in Parliament. The MoU does not come into effect yet,” he said. Kariyawasam noted that once the general elections were completed, the contents of the MoU would be applicable. “It is those who are disgruntled about the present situation that are complaining about such things. The party leaders have not found fault with anything and they are quite conversant with the present situation. After the election, all will be set right,” Kariyawasam said.
