SLFP suspends five seniors
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday suspended the membership of five of its senior parliamentary members from the party.
Accordingly, MPs Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana, S.B. Dissanayake, Dilan Perera, A.H.M. Fowzie, and Wijith Wijayamuni Zoysa were suspended from the SLFP, Party General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara told The Sunday Morning.
The members were suspended from the party due their affiliation with and engaging in activities with other political parties, Jayasekara said.
“These members have been actively working for other political parties for some time now. Some of them have even been involved in the campaigning activities of another party’s presidential candidate. Therefore, the SLFP leadership took the decision to suspend them from our party,” he said.
He said that further disciplinary action would be taken in the near future, including complete removal from the party.
When questioned with regard to whether disciplinary action will be taken against Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa for taking up the leadership of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) while being a senior advisor of the SLFP, Jayasekara said that a decision in this regard would be taken in the future.
