SLMC Election on 20th/21st: Court issues enjoining order halting process

  The Colombo District Court has issued an enjoining order effective till 19 April, barring the holding of the election of the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC). The SLMC election is scheduled to be held on 20 and 21 April and the Court has issued the enjoining order to allow the SLMC to file objections. Further, a notice for interim injunction and summons for the defendant/s have also been issued by the Court on Friday (9). The petition has mentioned that the subject Minister has powers to formulate regulations to elect members to the Council as per Section 72(1) of the Medical (Amendment) Act, and as per Section 72(4), to impose such regulations, those should be passed in Parliament and published in a gazette. But it is claimed that the respective regulations to hold the election have not been properly passed in Parliament.
