09 May 2021

Based on current projections, approximately 20,876 people will succumb to the Covid-19 virus in Sri Lanka by 01 September 2021. This data was published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), an independent global health research center at the University of Washington. In terms of daily deaths, numbers are expected to rise exponentially and peak on 14 June 2021, where 264 deaths are expected to be recorded due to Covid-19. Predictions show that following this, the numbers will steadily reduce to 88 daily deaths which may be recorded on 01 September 2021. In terms of hospital resource use, data shows that the peak requirement will occur on 16 June 2021. By then, a total of 17,049 hospital beds will be required. Of these 17,049, 3,451 ICU beds will be required to treat patients. In the IHME estimation of COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths to date, the research center uses officially reported COVID-19 deaths for nearly all locations.   Data on Sri Lanka can be viewed through this link - https://covid19.healthdata.org/sri-lanka
