Sri Lanka Telecom PLC (SLT) filed legal action on Monday (1) against SJB Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara in the Colombo District Court, for a public statement he had made regarding SLT, damaging its brand image, SLT noted issuing a statement yesterday (2).  Nanayakkara, on 3 September 2021, alleged that SLT hosted National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) data storage and “wrongfully” implied that SLT and the Chairman of SLT intentionally destroyed NMRA’s data for ulterior motives, despite the NMRA data being hosted by another company.  Further, legal action was taken to request Nanayakkara to pay a sum of Rs. 1 billion as damages for this incident.  SLT further stated Nanayakkara has acted with “express malice against the company, unlawfully, and against SLT’s legal rights by those remarks while he has no lawful defence based on truthfulness, public benefit, or privilege”.  However, prior to instituting the legal action, SLT had sent two Letters of Demand to Nanayakkara requesting him to publish a correction and to remove his erroneous posting from digital platforms, to which he had not adhered.  The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an investigation based on the statement made by the company on this issue and the CID has recorded a statement from Nanayakkara as well.
