SLTB employee cadre to be reduced through retirements

29 Jun 2022

BY Buddhika Samaraweera   Discussions are underway between the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) and the Department of Management Services to restructure the SLTB in such a way as to reduce its employee cadre to 24,000, and to bring several depots under the administration of one office. Speaking to The Morning, a senior official of the SLTB said: “The SLTB does not currently have a large excess of employees due to the layoffs of employees on a compensation system. The SLTB currently has close to 26,900 employees. However, it was recently planned to restructure the SLTB so as to reduce the number of employees to 24,000. We are currently discussing this with the Management Services Department.” However, he said that in the process of such restructuring, the existing employees of the SLTB would not be affected. Noting that it would take at least a few years for a restructuring to take place, he said that a significant number of employees would be retiring by that time. “It is also planned to reduce the number of SLTB offices islandwide under the restructuring and to bring several depots under the supervision of one office. It has been identified that in doing so, buses may have to travel long distances to obtain fuel. Therefore, all these issues are being studied and discussed at present,” he added. The SLTB, which is the State bus service provider in Sri Lanka, handled all public bus transport in the country between 1958 and 1978. First broken up into several regional boards, it was finally reconstituted as the SLTB in 2005. In 2016, the number of SLTB buses in the fleet was 7,769, of which 6,178 were in operation.
