Social distancing in pvt. buses: Only if there's a fare hike

17 Jul 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara Private buses would guarantee social distancing for commuters if they are allowed to hike the fare, The Morning learnt. “We have told the Government that we would make sure social distancing is maintained within our buses by only filling half the seats. In turn, we ask that we increase our fares by one-and-a-half times the current price,” Lanka Private Bus Owners Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne told The Morning. He said that he informed the Government of this multiple times but no action had been taken so far, resulting in buses not losing customers. “We have pointed out the dangers of not having social distancing measures in buses. People don’t want to use the bus because social distancing isn’t observed. Now we don’t earn a profit at the end of the day,” he said, pointing out that social distancing in the transport sector is essential in curbing the spread of Covid-19.
