Social media groups to protest on Sunday

31 Mar 2022

  • Call on public, parents, children to join to oppose crisis and fight for rights
  • JVP and UNP to stay away
BY Dinitha Rathnayake Social media groups are all set to protest against the Government on 3 April under the slogan “#Let’s regain our power”. The protests are mainly being organised by the “For the Public Service” Facebook group where they have asked the public to raise their voice against the current crisis. “Politics is useless. There is still a long way to go before this regime changes constitutionally. Until then, if we continue like this, we will not be left with a country. There is nothing else to do. On 3 April, at 3 p.m., the whole country should take to the streets. This protest is being organised by you and me. We all have a personal political opinion. Let’s keep it that way. But this time, we have a question about life. Let’s take to the streets for our future and country. We have created several WhatsApp groups in many cities, so talk to them about where they will meet. Everyone brings a poster that they created. Do not mention the name of a political party in any of those posters. This is not the work of a political party. Bring everyone that you know. Bring children too. Teach your children to fight against wrongdoings and for their rights. Teach children to have a backbone. Make sure that the struggle is not a mistake. Governments are afraid of people taking to the streets. They won’t count on this,” they noted. Meanwhile, the same groups staged mass protests on Wednesday (30 March), near the Viharamahadevi Park, in Kandy, the Kohuwala Junction, Nugegoda, the Wijerama Junction, Mount Lavinia, and Piliyandala. However, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) cautioned the general public to be vigilant and cautious of people joining unorganised protests staged against the conduct of the Government. In a notice posted on his official Facebook account, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake noted that the general public and organised movements have a right to protest against the ongoing crisis. He, however, urged the members of the public to beware of unorganised protests that have no responsible or proper organiser. The United National Party (UNP) also said it would not be joining any protests organised by anonymous groups. Taking to its official Twitter account, the UNP said the party is committed to continuing its Satyagraha campaign across the country. Accordingly, the party has scheduled its next Satyagraha campaign for 6 April.
