A trade union (TU) representing tuition teachers claimed that there were those among them who are daily wage earners, eking out a meagre living to survive on a day-to-day basis.
The Democratic Professional Lecturers’ Association noted this at a media briefing convened by them on Monday (18).
Association Secretary Hemapriya Kaviratne noted that the issue of tuition class teachers constituted a national problem.
National Organiser Lasantha Bandara requested that permission be granted by the relevant authorities to conduct tuition classes within the Western Province under a set of legal guidelines.
He noted that the Association was making this request in the backdrop of cinema halls, bars and pubs, and reception halls being allowed to open.
Bandara also reminded government authorities that their names had been struck off the list containing the names of those who had been eligible to receive the Rs 5,000 relief that had been given by the Government during the first wave of Covid-19.
