South-west monsoon to bring strong winds

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Department of Meteorology yesterday (25) warned that due to active south-west monsoon conditions over Sri Lanka, fairly strong winds up to 40-50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph can be expected in the western slope of the central hills, the Northern, North Central, and North Western Provinces, and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee Districts today (26). It also stated that showers or thundershowers would occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces and the Galle and Matara Districts, while fairly heavy showers about 50 mm could be expected at some places in said provinces and districts. In a statement issued yesterday, the Meteorology Department also stated that several spells of showers would occur in the North Western Province. Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Uva Province and the Ampara and Batticaloa Districts in the evening or night. According to the department, showers or thundershowers will occur in the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Galle via Colombo and winds will be south-westerly. “Wind speed will be 40-50 kmph in the sea areas around the island. The wind speed can increase up to 60 kmph at times in the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar,” the statement issued by the department further read. Adding that the sea areas extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Matara and Hambantota and the sea areas extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Mannar could be very rough at times, the department has requested the Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant.
